Back in the day, it used to be that the only ways of getting your business’ name out their was through one of two methods:
- Word of Mouth 🗣
- Paid Advertising 💸
These are still amazing tools for marketing your business and should absolutely not be discounted, however over recent years there is a new player on the field who is becoming more and more important by the day.
You guessed it… Social Media!
Why use it?
On the assumption that you haven’t been living under a rock since the late 90’s, you should know that there are dozens of social media platforms out there just waiting for you to use! And the best part? Most social media platforms are completely free to use, and for the potential they offer, I’d say that’s a steal.
Which platform should I post on?
There are hundreds of platforms out there in the wild to use, some of which you probably use yourself to scroll through whilst sitting on the toilet 🚽
Some popular ones include:
- Facebook (now Meta)
- TikTok
- and many more…
Each of these have their own strengths and weaknesses, and each provide distinct advantages to generating exposure to your brand.
It may seem like you should be plastering your business everywhere you can by creating social media platforms on everything from Facebook to Tumblr - this is a common misconception, and is almost always a really bad idea.
Why not?
Well, there are two reasons why we say this.

1) Time is Money! ⏰💸
- The first one should be the more obvious of the two, and that is that it just takes up too much time for its return by having to take care of too many platforms. You won’t be be able to manage all of your accounts, interact with your audience and potential customers, and focus on other important aspects of your business - it’s just not realistic!

2) Your target audience isn’t on everything!
- Rule #1 of marketing is that you need to know exactly who you are aiming to market to. You should figure out which platforms your target market and client base is using regularly, and only target those. You also don’t need to target all platforms straight away, either. Focus on growing one social media platform first if it suits you better - just don’t forget to claim the username 😉
